Our Patron - The Most Reverend Dr Mouneer Hanna Anis, former Archbishop of the Episcopal/Anglican Province of Alexandria

Bishop Mouneer received his Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery from Cairo University, Egypt in 1974. From 1979-2000 he served at Harpur Memorial Hospital in Menouf both as a Resident (until 1989) and from 1980 as the Director of the Hospital. In 1999, Dr Mouneer was ordained a priest and served at All Saints’ Cathedral, Cairo. He then became the Administrator of the Diocese of Egypt and later was elected by the Diocesan Synod to be the third Egyptian Bishop of the Diocese of Egypt with North Africa & the Horn of Africa. He completed professional and theological training at Moore Theological College in Sydney, Australia, the Diocese of Canterbury in Kent (UK) as well as at Nashotah House in Wisconsin, USA before his consecration in 2000. In 2007, Bishop Mouneer was elected as the President Bishop of the Anglican Province of Jerusalem and the Middle East. He was re-elected to serve another term as President Bishop in 2012. With the formation of the Episcopal/Anglican Province of Alexandria, Archbishop Mouneer postponed retirement in order to help get the new Province established. He was succeeded by Archbishop Samy Fawzy on 7 June 2021.

Our Co- Patron -The Right Revd Dr Michael Ipgrave OBE, Bishop of Lichfield

The Right Revd Dr Michael Ipgrave OBE, Bishop of Lichfield

Bishop Michael was ordained Deacon in 1982 and Priest in 1983 in the Diocese of Peterborough. After more than 20 years ministry in Leicestershire and Japan, he became Archdeacon of Southwark in 2004. He served as  Interfaith Relations Adviser to the Archbishops’ Council and Secretary of the Churches’ Commission on Interfaith Relations. From 2012 to 2016 he was Area Bishop of Woolwich, in the Diocese of Southwark. He chairs the Council of Christians and Jews, and is Co-Chair of the Anglican-Lutheran Society and of the Church of England’s Mission Theology Advisory Group. Bishop Michael has written extensively on interfaith issues and on questions of religion and human rights.

Our President - The Right Reverend Dr Samy Fawzy Shehata - Archbishop of the Diocese of Egypt and the Episcopal/Anglican Province of Alexandria

Samy was ordained in 1990 and assisted Bishop Ghais Abd El Malek from 1994 to 1998. He has led a team of ministers since 2002 in Alexandria, and has taught at the Alexandria School of Theology since 2005. He was appointed Dean of St. Mark’s Pro-Cathedral in 2009 and Principal of the Alexandria School of Theology in 2013. Bishop Samy was consecrated at All Saints’ Cathedral in Cairo in 2017 and elected Coadjutor Bishop of the Diocese of Egypt with North Africa & the Horn of Africa in April, 2020. He serves as a member of the Executive, Financial, and Literature boards in the Diocese of Egypt. He is also a member of Bayt El-Eila Dialogue with Al-Azhar and co-Secretary to the Egypt Council of Churches. Dr Samy was inaugerated as Archbishop of the Episcopal /Anglkican Proivince of Alexandria on 7 June 2021.

 

Bishop for the Horn of Africa - Bishop Martin Reakes-Williams

Bishop Martin was ordained in 1991; he served a curacy in London before moving to Germany where he served for 25 years establishing Leipzig English Church with the support of the International Church Society. He has been Rector of St Mathews Addis Ababa since 2021 and has helped Bishop Anthony set up the structures of the new dioceses in Ethiopia and the Horn of Africa.

 

Archdeacon of Egypt - The Venerable Dr Emad Basilios

Dr Emad was born in Cairo 1962 and graduated from the Pharmacy College in 1988. He is married to Hanaa, and they have two daughters. He graduated from the Alexandria School of Theology with a Bachelor’s degree in 2010, and as a Master of Divinity in 2018.

Dr Emad was ordained as Deacon in September 2011 and Priest in 2012. He then served in the Church of St. Michael and All Angels, Heliopolis as Assistant Priest before becoming Rector of the Church of Saint Athanasius, Ain Shams in 2014 where he continues to serve.

 

Bishop of North Africa - Bishop Anthony

Bishop Anthony was born in Zimbabwe and lived for many years in South Africa. He previously worked with HM Diplomatic Service during which time he was ordained - he has served as a parish priest and a school chaplain. Since his consecration in 2021 as an assistant Bishop in the Diocese of Egypt he has supported Archbishop Samy in preparing the three new dioceses in the Province of Alexandria. At present he chairs the Board of JMECA (the Jerusalem and the Middle East Church Association) and he also serves as Canon of Westminster (Abbey) where, as Rector, he has particular responsibility for the relationships with Parliament and other religions.

 

Bishop of Gambella - Bishop Jeremiah

Bishop Jeremiah hails from Gambella town. He was installed into full time ministry in 2003 to lead the St Luke’s Anglican Church in Gambella; in the following year he was made Deacon and began planting village churches and tutoring lay readers. From 2011-2015 he studied a theological Degree at Alexandria School of Theology and after graduation served as a lecturer at St Frumentius Anglican Theological College in Gambella.

Chair - The Right Reverend Dr Bill Musk

The Right Reverend Dr Bill Musk

Dr Bill Musk, until retirement in 2015, was Assistant Bishop for North Africa in the Anglican Diocese of Egypt with North Africa & the Horn of Africa and Rector of St George's Church, Tunis.

Educated at the University of Oxford, where he read Modern History, the University of London via London Bible College, Dr Musk first worked in religious publishing in the Middle East before gaining a Master's degree at Fuller Theological Seminary and completing ordination training at Trinity College, Bristol. Ordained deacon in 1981 and priest a year later, he obtained his doctorate at the University of South Africa in 1984. After a period as Assistant Minister at the Anglican Cathedral in Cairo and nearly twenty years of parish ministry in the UK in the Diocese of Liverpool and then Southwark, he was consecrated as Assistant Bishop for North Africa and inducted as Rector of St George's Tunis in 2008.

Dr Musk has published widely on interactions with Islam including The Unseen Face of Islam (1989), Holy War (1992), Touching the Soul of Islam (1995), Kissing Cousins? (2005) and most recently The Certainty Trap (2008).

 

Vice Chair - Reverend Richard Hibbert

Canon Richard Hibbert is the Vicar of Holy Trinity , Coventry. He has been Rural Dean of Bedford (2010-2020) and a member of General Synod (2005-2015).  His interest in the Diocese of Egypt and the Friends of the Province of Alexandria was prompted by a friend’s suggestion of a pastoral visit. ‘The work and mission of the Anglican Church in Egypt inspired me then and I continue to a real heart for the church in Egypt, North Africa, and the Middle East. ‘

Honorary Secretary - Michael Maddox

Michael Maddox, our Honorary Secretary, had a full career as a Royal Navy Officer. He became a member of the EDA while serving as Naval Attaché Cairo and worshipping at All Saints Cathedral in the early 1990s. He retained a close link with the region as trustee (until 2015) of a bridge building charity – British Arab Exchanges.

The Reverend Canon Chris Andrews

Canon Chris Andrews works in support of Christian ministry, development and interfaith dialogue in Egypt. He is an agent in the UK for the Wady Craft Shop at All Saints' cathedral, Cairo. He is also a volunteer with Embrace the Middle East. He is a member of the Interfaith Forum in Bury St Edmunds where he lives.

Mrs Bridget Davidson

The grand-daughter of the Reverend Temple Gairdner who with the Rev Douglas Thornton were sent by CMS to Egypt in 1898 and in 1899 to work among the people in Cairo.  Bridget has been a trustee of the EDA/FAPA since 1989. All her grandparents were CMS missionaries and she taught languages. With her husband Tony she worked with the British Council serving in India, Borneo, Brazil and Pakistan. She has represented EDA at Synod.

Ms Helen Fraser

Helen served in Egypt for 17 years under the auspices of the Church Mission Society, initially, as PA to Bishop Mouneer Anis, and then as the Development Officer for the Alexandria School of Theology and Funding Training Manager for EpiscoCare. In 2020 she moved back to England, and she is now development manager at Christ Church Guildford.

Dr Peter Le Feuvre

Dr Peter Le Feuvre is a retired GP in Kent. He continues to be actively involved with Primary Care International, delivering training to a range of low and middle income countries, including a number of countries in the Province of Alexandria. Previously he was a CMS Mission Partner in Tunisia.

Doug Thornton

Doug Thornton is the grandson of Douglas M Thornton, who with Temple Gairdner were early CMS missionaries in Cairo. He has been a member of EDA/FAPA since 1989  providing an invaluable service as website manager and amassing historical material. A former electrical engineer and financier. He is a Trustee of Chiltern Christian Trust.

The Reverend Canon Andrew Wheeler

The Reverend Canon Andrew Wheeler was previously Mission Pastor of St Saviours Guildford and Guildford Diocese's World Mission Advisor. He is a long term Church Mission Society (CMS) Mission Partner who has extensive experience of the Middle East and North Africa having ministered in Egypt and the Sudan. 

 

The Reverend Canon Mike Parker

Mike Parker is based in Edinburgh and ministers at the Scottish Episcopal Church. He served 4 1/2 years as English speaking minister at All Saints Cathedral Cairo, and continues to offer pastoral support to people working cross-culturally in the Middle East in both Anglican and Interdenominational settings. He also co-ordinates prayer for one of the regional mission agencies. .

 

The Reverend Adel Shokralla

Revd Adel Shokralla is vicar of St Peter and St Andrew Church, Old Windsor; he was a trustee of the Egyptian Diocese Association.

 

Angela Huddart

Angela Huddart A teacher of modern languages who spent much of her time overseas including a period in Egypt when she was engaged with young people through All Saints Cathedral. She is now actively involved with Mission and Outreach at St Andrews Church, Bedford.
